What is NixOS ? It's a very different OS, unlike anything you've seen before!

Hi All,

This is my latest update on NixOS.

A few things have changed since I installed it, the main one is that I prefer subscribing to the Starlink ‘Standby’ option due to the very low cost of $8.50 AUD/month for unlimited data but only 1/2Mbit/second bandwith. This is a deal breaker for NixOS which requires massive bandwidth for updates.

As a result I’ve broken my NixOS install somehow and even while back on the higher speeds, still have un-fixable issues like this:

unpacking source archive /build/archive.tar.gz?sha=b1fd04f841f0d88b025be7357482cf7f48de4dae

gzip: stdin: unexpected end of file
tar: Unexpected EOF in archive
tar: Unexpected EOF in archive
tar: Error is not recoverable: exiting now
do not know how to unpack source archive /build/archive.tar.gz?sha=b1fd04f841f0d88b025be7357482cf7f48de4dae
error: builder for ‘/nix/store/xg9vmyx0jliw4d0hpiq1wgjq2dpzr0mq-source.drv’ failed with exit code 1
error: 1 dependencies of derivation ‘/nix/store/xzv0jbq2rx7np8v2rg93h51z60v30x04-kicad-packages3d-b1fd04f841.drv’ failed to build
error: 1 dependencies of derivation ‘/nix/store/kzlnay0xcrxr50vs0vldmxwndskf42j9-kicad-9.0.1.drv’ failed to build

All in all, I’ve been pretty happy with NixOS, from the install to usability, but as a result of the fragile NixOS download system, I’ve decided to give FreeBSD V15 a try and will post a report of how that went later.

Cheers

Terry
