Wireless Network Speed Testing

@zeeclor , i’m messing around with the placement of my five mesh network nodes. I’d like to test the throughput at various points in the house to see what impact the placement of those nodes has. I’m picturing standing at various points in the house and running a test to see where the dark spots are. Can you recommend a tool for benchmarking network speed?

I don’t know of any specific tools but as you have seen my Unifi network gives a percentage score for each device connecting to an Ubiquiti node.

When I’ve set up nodes in the past I have just wandered around with my android and watched (and listened to) wifi analyzer.

The best rule of thumb that I had was that a wired connection is better than a wifi one so the aim is to minimise the number of hops back to the router.

I’ll check with Terry who used to do this work professionally.

Terry’s advice was good, but a bit general for what i was picturing. I’ve found iperf as something that I can run ion docker on both a server, and then on a laptop that i’ll wander around the house with. I’ve printer our a floorplan of the house, so i’m planning on walking around the house writing transfer speeds all over the map to get an idea of where i’m getting rubbish performance. I really just want to prove that the bedroom is a dead zone.

So what did the iperf show in the dead zone?

I’m finding that the results from iperf are a bit up and down. I might need to script up something that can run iperf a bunch of times to give me a standard deviation to get an idea where the performance is less consistent.
