USB-C Logitech Bolt

They finally did it! The Logitech “bolt” that lets me use one keyboard and mouse across up to three computers finally comes in USB-C! I forget why I wanted that, but I remember it being off that it wasn’t available.

? so you can get more than one USB dongle to plugin into multiple PC’s?

if so - fantastic.. beats using a KVM..

if correct, Im off to get one..

Yeah, I’ve got one “bolt” in my left Intel NUC running Fedora, and another in my right Windows 11 work laptop. The MX Mechanical keyboard has three buttons dedicated to which of these bolts to connect to. The mouse has a single button underneath that cycles through the three machines.

I remember now. I used to have an old Surface Go on my desk too, and it only had a USB C port. For a while it was in the mix, but it has since died, so now that a USB C bolt is an option I don’t need it any more.

So this is KVM without the V. I remember olden times (circa 2005) when the inputs were PS2 and VGA. The KVM we had sucked but it would mostly allow swapping between one of 6 machines. Such technology is passé now. Hopefully the whole lot can be done with high end USB-C.

Is the bolt limited to three machines? I have a bluetooth keyboard that sounds similar in that it has three buttons that are dedicated to selecting the wanted connection.

“is it just three” is an interesting question. The keyboard only handles 3, two of the three mice also handle three computers. The trackball only handles two.

The reason it’s interesting is because the software on windows, Mac (and the Linux alternative; solaar) will see more than that. They are all aware of my four devices. I think that makes it more versatile, but I can’t imagine the use case.

I also have a Dell keyboard and mouse pair that supports one RF USB dongle and two Bluetooth connections, but I found that the Bluetooth handshake was too sluggish. I flip between the two all day. If one computer takes more then five seconds to respond to a request (ahem, Windows) I indulge a side effort on the Linux one. The changeover time is practically instant (but I wish the selector button on the mice wasn’t on the bottom).
