So, please put your hand up if there’s something you’d like to share with us. @ab23 taught us a lot about devops a while back, and @Marco showed us how he’s using node red and IoT devices to manage irrigation.
Even if you’re just telling us a bit about yourself, the work you do or projects you’re working on at home… you’ll open our eyes to new ideas and ways of working.
We could, but we’ve got a real-estate problem. I’m trying to show out into the future as much as possible with columns. I used “tooltips” to show the topics, so if you hover your mouse you’ll see the topic. If we included all of that extra text we’d probably only be able to see the next three meetings, which would probably necessitate a “jogger” control to let us “click right” to see future events.
On the subject of upcoming presentations, i’ve put @matthew919 (“baby Matt”) down to tell us (me) about Music Assistant and other Home Assistant wins he’s had.
I’ve put this down for our Next Jitsi call because i didn’t think @matthew919 would make it into our next in person meeting in the city in June.
I know it’s a bit 50:50 for you @matthew919, so don’t feel bad if you can’t make it that night.
hi all - enjoyed meeting you alll last night,
definitely looking fwd to HA Music assistant (its been on my HA to do list … so im going to hold off and learn from matts preso in due course)
also looking fwd to learn about AI … enjoyed the interaction last night - but honesty the jargon went way over my head … i will do some AI 101 YT vids !
so i can maybe understand what ya all are talking about.
Finally:
i mentioned to David (i think) about my boats “automation & marine monitoring system”
(no its not HA based … although there is a few HA integrations available if i wanted to)
when your next scratching for a preo - im happy to give you an insight into what i have done… so put this on a “future” list if your interested.
suject to fuel situation in the July - sept period - i willl be on the boat “up north”.
but with starlink on board the boat - i have great connectivity no matter where we may be!
so jitsi video & slideware all possible … even a real time video tour demo! is possible
not hammo … but Coral Sea Marina Airlie Beach …. or depending on weather
.. somewhere at anchor in the witsundays! the beauty of starlink connectivity …
… but fuel situation still looking dubious … but I can still stream it from the boat … just parked at home in mooloolaba !
Yes Josh presented on his various attempts at syncing obsidian and the solution he finally settled on.
For the 28th we have Arjen Lentz reporting on his work at Repair Cafe at Keperra. Arjen is active in community technology circles via Repair Cafe, Humbug and Everything Open.
For the second talk we thought we’d throw it open to members to talk on anything they want for as short or as long (cut off at 30 minutes) they want.
For the first WIBWO (What I’ve Been Working On) I’ve volunteered to talk on running your own mailserver. I am hoping @Belfry and others will be there to tell me all the things I’ve got wrong.
unfortunately cant make it down for 28th (this week) … and given its. f2f, will not be ble to join via video i assume.
i hoping to join jitsi on 11th june
I had a lot of fun last night. Thanks @mcrilly for providing the venue, and thanks @zeeclor for walking us through your mail hosting journey over the years. I’m still not “there” yet with the idea of self hosting my email, but it does seem a little less intimidating these days. I can’t overstate how traumatizing (and fruitless) my sendmail configuration attempts were in the late 90s. In fact now that I think about it I’m surprised I stuck with Linux at all
Also great to meet @Bryan in person. I’m sorry my Copilot budget ran out right when I was about to give a demo.
If you’ll be with us for our next Jitsi call @Bryan , I have an idea for a presentation that might demonstrate why @matthew919 and I are so excited about coding agents.
I need to work out who’s presenting in June. So far that’s the best idea I’ve got - to give a presentation myself.
Any other takers?
An alternative to giving a full prepared presentation is to just take a five minute slot to show us something you’re working on. We’ll probably ask enough questions to turn that into a twenty minutes group discussion, so don’t feel like to have to have a slide deck before you offer to “present”.
Yes, as I mentioned, email is an ancient technology but it remains the OG form of federated communication. For homelabbers not wishing to be beholden to the tech giants it’s an option.
My talk was in summary:
docker
docker mail server
domain name / DNS provider
relay
For those interested you can easily run your own mail server if willing to accept passing the mail through a relay.
Mailgun is free if you send less than 100 emails per day. Claude says:
If 100/day isn’t enough, a couple of alternatives worth considering:
MailerSend — offers 500 emails/month free
Amazon SES — charges just $0.10 per 1,000 emails with no monthly fee, which is very cost-effective at low volumes Saaspricepulse
Mailgun’s Basic paid plan starts at $15/month for 10,000 emails if you need more headroom Usebouncer
in on 11 June. I have implemented a swap file on the server so we should stop OOMing. As a result meet.homelabbrisbane.com.au should be up all the time.
Thanks to @mcrilly for hosting last night and at some stage I’d love to see how he uses Codex.
The Service clubs of the 90s (Rotary, Lions) had a “3 minuter”. A time limited talk by one of the members at each meeting. The ultimate version of this was run at the annual Linux Conference Australia. The last session on the last day had a series of three minute talks. At the two minute 30 mark the audience was encouraged to quietly begin a 30 second countdown that became progressively louder as you approached zero.
We are not that obsessed or time pressed. HLBers are at various skill levels, so even if you’re starting out, a WIBWO (what I’ve been working on) on your latest passion can inspire others or give you some great ideas on what to work on in the next step.
I’ve put myself down for a presentation on the 11th. I’m hoping that @Bryan can make it because his interest in remotely accessing Obsidian inspired what i want to present. With any luck @jiskh will be able to join us while he’s out of town, because i think what i want to show will be of interest to him too.
After that i suspect we’ll be going around the table and hearing some “three minuter’s”, unless anybody wants to put their hand up for something a big heftier?
