Local SEQ Events

Hi all,

I’m starting this thread in the same spirit as @jdownie’s thread earlier this year about Google I/O Extended - Brisbane. I thought it might be a good place to share events of interest in the SE Queensland area. Please post any events that you think might be of interest to HLB members.

Cheers,

Belfry

Very late notice, but tomorrow (Saturday, 13 September) is Sunfest, hosted by the Sunshine Coast Amateur Radio Club. Kick off is at 9:30AM.

I point out the event to the HLB community specifically as there’s a Meshtastic talk at 10AM and several of us have been playing with Meshtastic recently. Tickets for Sunfest (and the Meshtastic talk) are available via Eventbrite.

Thanks @Belfry,
Like the idea of this thread, as I allways seem to find out about events too late or after they have happened (kind of like right now…) But hopefully with the thread here we can share things earlier.

Cheers, @matthew919. I also seem to always have a calendar clash or find out about things after they’ve happened. Having said that, the late posting about Sunfest was totally on me - I had intended to post it a few days earlier but never quite got there. I also missed the Meshtastic talk (traffic on the Bruce Hwy was far worse than usual, particularly with the heavy rain :woman_facepalming:) but I did enjoy the event and more importantly, I brought some new toys home :joy:.

I’m not affiliated with any of the organisations or events in the thread and am posting them here for the convenience of HLB Discourse readers only.

Some more events that may be of interest to homelabbers in the area, with a bit more notice this time:

  • ComfyCon AU - Sunday 21 September (Virtual Event) Note: session times in Brisbane timezone
A cybersecurity conference that originally started during the COVID lockdowns - no registration required and free to stream. A few session names on there look like they may be of interest to homelabbers. ComfyCon leads into…
  • PancakesCon - Sunday 21 September (Virtual Event) Note: session times in Chicago timezone - add 15 hours for us (e.g., 9pm start Brisbane local).
A similar event, with more sessions that may be of interest to homelabbers. One thing which I think is a neat idea by PancakesCon is:

All PancakesCon talks must be 40-45 minutes long. They MUST consist of two parts: A brief talk about any cybersecurity topic targeted at junior professionals / students , and a brief talk about something which is not IT-related . The non-IT topics can cover anything from hobbies to fitness, cooking to music. The purpose of this is twofold: to aid virtual attention and learning by giving mental breaks , and to encourage healthy work-life balance.

QTech 2025 - Sat & Sun November 1 & 2 (Kedron-Wavell RSL, Chermside - next to Chermside Library)

Event organised by Brisbane VHF Group which will undoubtedly focus more on radio related topics than homelab ones, but may still be of interest to those wanting to explore other technical areas at home. I think presenters are still being finalised, but I have found a brief list here. Online streaming tickets are $30, and in person two day tickets are $125, via Humanitix. I’ll update this post when a finalised presenter list is posted.

Gold Coast Amateur Radio Society Hamfest - Sunday November 9 (Country Paradise Parklands, Nerang)
Probably easier for me to post a copy of the Facebook post about it as it has all the details:

Hosted by the Gold Coast Amateur Radio Society, it’ll be a good opportunity to buy any odds and ends for the homelab, particularly if you’re interested in amateur radio and/or newly licensed.

Less of a “Local” event, but eResearch is back in Brisbane this year. I’ll be attending all week, but if any of the talks seem interesting I’m sure that you could organise some time with the presenter to go over it.

Comfycom’s Sunday night’s 18.35 session, Homelabs for Hackers: Breaking Things at Home So You Don’t Do It at Work, sounds like us, but Pancakescon’s Sunday dinner, “Cyber Planning and Pot Roast in the Slow Cooker”, is a little late for me at 1.20 am.

Anything in particular taking your fancy?

There are a few that appeal to me on a personal level but I’m there for work; so…

etc. I’ll be sitting in a lot of auditoriums for a while!
