Compose Yourself - Usefull Self Hosted Software

Always enjoy finding usefull docker images and self hosted software, was glad to see how well the n8n was taken up by others as well. Also been great to see existing implementations, taking some of those on.

Thought a topic dedicated to finding usefull docker images would be better rather than posting individually as I am constantly finding great solutions to problems I have (or problems I dont have…yet…). TBH this is my first time using a forum, still getting used to how best to post ideas, discoveries and questions.

Watching Lawrence systems this morning and noticed a few self hosted apps he has, and was blown away at IT Tools. Quick and simple to setup, can’t believe I haven’t seen this before! It’s got a bunch of useful tools for devs and general IT users. I had come across Stirling PDF a few weeks ago and thought that was the bees knees, but this has blown it out of the water!

Love to hear what others use that makes their lives simpler.

Cool subject line :100:

That IT Tools is fantastic. In fact, i’m thinking that i might a) host it at home, and b) incorporate it into my main menu.

@matthew919 knows this about me, but for everybody else’s benefit, i host my own “main menu”. I use a Brave extension called New Tab Redirect so that my browser always gives me my main menu.

My main menu works with key codes, so i press “H” for Home, “L” for Lab and “D” for Discourse to get to this forum (for example). It’s a hierarchy of shortcuts that i adjust over time to suit my needs.

There are a bunch of very cool utilities on IT Tools. I’d like to be able to just hit H, A, I, C (Home Apps, IT Tools, Colours) for the Color Converter (for example).

Good find!

Grist — A Powerful Alternative to Spreadsheets and Databases

I’ve been using Grist Lately, and it’s quickly becoming one of my favorite tools (alongside n8n) for organizing information. If you’ve ever found yourself juggling between spreadsheets, databases, and dashboards — Grist might be the perfect middle ground.

Grist lets you:

  • Build relational tables (link data between sheets easily, like a lightweight database)
  • Use formulas like a spreadsheet, but with real data integrity
  • Design dashboards with filters, charts, and custom views
  • Capture Data Create forms to control input into the database
  • Self-host it if you prefer (there’s a Docker image available)

I’ve been using it to track my garden plants and comments with related photos — one table for plants, another for notes, and a dashboard that ties them together. It’s surprisingly flexible once you get the hang of it.

Second use case is for use with n8n to add new youtube channels to monitor and download. As well as which videos in these channels have been downloaded.
