Android Auto wireless adapters

I had not heard of these devices until the week-end.

Anybody got any recommendations?

Ooh, i’d never heard of them either. In fact, i had to ask ChatGPT what they did.

Turns out that i need/want one, so i’m keen to see what you decide. I got an after market head unit for my old Mazda which does support wireless Android Auto, but my Toyota needs me to connect a cable.

Yeah, my 7 year old Honda only has wired.

My mates have the Quad Lock Wireless Carplay Adaptor and the CarlinKit Mini ULTRA CarPlay & Android Auto 2-in-1 Adapter. I’ve gone with the Ottocast Mini, but for $78 which seems to be about the going rate for these adapters.

I’ll bring it to Chermside for show and tell … or is that drive and tell.

Ooh, yes please. We might all end up in the car park huddled around your car’s front doors

I got a cheapie off AliExpress and it works pretty well, however it can be a bit painful if you’re switching between phones / drivers. I often find that one phone connects to AA via BT and the other to the head unit via BT and it gets all sorts of confused.

Really though, it’s a lot cheaper than replacing an otherwise functional in-car display, and works pretty damned well since all it’s doing is taking the AA Wireless video signal and jamming it down USB 2.0 anyway - the audio was always going via BT.

I’m following along with the development of the AA power delivery injector too which will neatly solve issues of “which phone is supposed to be on the head unit” by having the phone plug in directly.

My Ottocast Mini came earlier this week and seems to work OK. There are more sophisticated adapters but the Mini is fine, particularly if there is a principal driver for the vehicle.

We are a mixed marriage household (Android/iPhone) so the changeover is a little slow as Perplexity explains, but it is tolerable.
