A Logo for Homelab Brisbane

It might be time for us to knock up a logo for our group. I really just want something to put on our web page as a favicon.ico, but it does flag that we could do with some kind of “branding” anyway.

I’m hoping that some of you are proficient with ai image generation and could knock out some candidates for us to collectively choose from at our next Jitsi meeting.

Any takers?

I think I am a fail.

This is what I did for the old homepage.

… or maybe steal discourse’s icon. :bridge_at_night:

I reckon your first one is the one to beat. I like the idea of the bridge in the icon.

I had terrible trouble getting the AI to create the image with test tube to the right of the home and gave up eventually.

Maybe get the @techman on to it and see if a local LLM can do the job!!

Sadly I have no AI image generation experience, My home AI’s while :70b and slow, can only analyse images, not generate them.

So I can’t help here, sorry.

I asked my son Samuel, the family AI expert to see what he could do.
AI was a big fail, so he produced some alternatives himself :slightly_smiling_face:

Thanks Terry. And thank Sam for us.

I like the middle one for its steam punk vibe but will go with consensus decision.

Ooh, now we’re rolling!

I kicked this off because i have ideas, but no capability; not with AI tools, but not even with paint programs like Gimp.

So, please bear that in mind with this contribution.

  • I like the test tube and the house. could the test tube be superimposed over the house to save a bit of space?
  • the word “Brisbane” in the logo wouldn’t need to be there if we included something distinctly “Brisbane” in the image. Ideas of mine are…
    • the storey bridge
    • the shape of the river from a map
  • it’ll need to be distinctive when scaled down to something like 64x64, so less complexity

Any thoughts? Should i have a go at something like this in Gimp? What did Sam use @techman ?

I’ve no idea, I know he only use a old Samsung Note Mobile phone atm.

I’m still playing around with this. I’m not sure i’m in love with the beaker/house that i got from ChatGPT before my quota ran out, so i’ll play with that a little bit. I’m also wrestling with how to use colour effectively. Anyway, this is just a little progress update.

My attempt using ChatGPT this afternoon. I like the inclusion of the story bridge, but tried to incorporate a soldering iron, code, and computing. I doubt it would scale to favicon size very well!

Your design looked a bit like a beaker with the storey bridge as a roof. I’ve tried to build on that, but struggled to make the roof look good.
I think the colours will make this distinctive enough to be recognisable at low resolution, but that upside down wifi idea looks a bit forced.

I think i’m close, but i’d love something better for the roof. My only other idea is two mouse cursors (mirrored) but i think that’ll look a bit forced too.

Any ideas or feedback?

I’ve made some progress on this job.

I liked @matthew919 's suggestion of focusing on the initials “HLB”. I then went and embarrassed myself trying to be artistic in Gimp.

Ultimately this post is to show you all the latest candidate for a logo, but i think everyone here will be more interested in the journey…

Oh, I like that.

Both of the last two in that ChatGPT session get a thumbs up from me. Fascinating to see the way the chat progressed too - thanks for sharing!

Damn thats looking good!
I like the touch of adding the server LED icons

Anybody got anything they’d like to add to this thread? I can ask for more or less of something if we’d like to keep going, hopefully finding something better.

Perhaps a really simple version (no HLB lettering, no lights on the servers, etc.) with just the river, the house, and the grey rectangles for the servers. Not to replace the main logo, but something that will embroider or go into a favicon and so on. A secondary version for those niche use cases that need really low detail more than anything else.

Well, i reckon i can make that kind of variation with Gimp once we’ve settled on the overall design. The river’s probably the only weak point because i don’t think it’s distinctly “Brisbane”. I’ve just added another variation to the chat thread with ChatGPT. Can you guys see the latest variation if you refresh that link that i posted earlier.

Can’t see any updates on the above link
